Government of India Fast-Tracks 6G Trials

India goes rapidly toward 6G trials with indigenous technology development, telecom-industry partnerships and spectrum planning. setting the leadership stage for next-gen network innovation.

Fast-Tracks 6G Trials

India’s telecom industry is gearing up as the Government of India pushes plans for 6G trials. Both the operators and tech partners are ready for the network upgrade nationwide. India could shape global standards soon with their next-gen connectivity, and with this, search trends like “DoT spectrum for 6G,”  “indigenous 6G technology,” “India 6G testing,” and “telecom 6G roadmap” are spreading around the internet.

Telecom operators like Airtel, Reliance Jio, and VI are starting to prepare their proposals with some research institutes, global vendors and chipmakers. For the pilot projects, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has already begun shortlisting the enterprises for the initial projects, which will be focused on super-fast 6G use cases like AI-driven networks, holographic communication, smart factories, satellite-terrestrial integration, drone connectivity, and remote surgeries. At the initial stage, it is reported that two telecom giants are already prepared with their own technology to spread the 6G connectivity all over India. As well as we got the information about VI too, as the network operator is a bit late to the 6G race, but still it is able to get some customer base with their good network service in some areas.

Rumours indicate that the upcoming allocation of spectrum for the trial may include the sub-THz and mmWave bands, with indigenous hardware and Open RAN models. It is also seen that the Government is now trying to reduce the foreign dependency on this matter. Searches continue to climb with keywords like “Open RAN 6G deployment,”  “spectrum for 6G India,” and “satellite backhaul telecom”. Previously, we were dependent on some technologies imported from foreign countries. But now with the Government's digital India mission and with the help of recent technologies and AI dependencies, Operators can create a system with the help of some tech companies; it is possible to create India's own system to do the deployment fast. Also, we may have seen network operator companies now entering the sector of the technical field, which makes it easier to use their own ecosystem to make India 6G-ready.

Here, a well-known operator named The Bharat 6G Alliance is going to work with enterprises, startups and academia. The formation is expected to play a key role in R&D funding,  intellectual property ownership and shaping policy. With all these, keywords like “India 6G leadership plan” and  “Bharat 6G Alliance updates” are seen to trend on the internet among the investors and telecom analysts. Bharat 6G Alliance is a platform which primarily focuses on the development, research and deployment of 6G networks in India. It was introduced in India by our honourable Prime Minister of India in 2023. As the name suggests, it basically focuses on creating the best environment in India to make India 6G-ready. As well as now, it is working with the network operator, which makes it faster to complete the goal of making it 6G-ready soon. We could expect to receive 6G networks soon after the successful deployment.

Meanwhile, with the rise of AI, telcos are working on AI-based network automation to improve efficiency, real-time traffic management and latency reduction. 6G-based networks and applications are going to be used for defence communications, national digital infrastructure, and to enable smart mobility. We can expect the commercial rollout could be released and begin between 2029 to 2031 if the trial rounds succeed. As we can see here, it is not that far away when we will be able to see the 6G-ready India. In the year 2029, we could expect to receive the 6G networks in India. As some of the users are still using 4G smartphones, it is now a full-fledged 4G era. Here we can see some users are currently using 5G, and here, mostly, we are seeing Jio and Airtel users are getting the benefits of a true 5G network. Nowadays, the newly launched mobiles are already 5G ready. We are expecting that within 3 years the 5G era will be gone, just like we are witnessing the end of the 4G era.

As India wants to become the key contributor to global 6G standards, telecom analysts could predict a collaboration with South Korea, Japan, and the EU. The push towards 6G trials also aligns with Atmanirbhar Bharat and Digital India Goals. That’s the reason that India is pushing to start the trials and spectrum allocation as soon as possible.
